*sigh*

What really gets me is two things:

1. People still want to resurrect Confurence. Okay, I can see wanting to create a new event, but that name is about as tainted as it gets. It's like building cruise liners and naming them for maritime disasters. "Welcome aboard the Good Ship Titanic! Our sister vessels, the Andrea Doria and the Sultana, will be coming in to dock in a few hours! Have fun!"

2. For some reason, many of the folks coming to Darrell's defense have been doing it in a way that makes him look worse. My belief about the affair is that he was pushed into it by the hotel in order to try to mitigate the massive debt he'd be dealing with. (At a meeting two weeks before the con, Darrell explained that he was going to be short on his room nights and paying $15,000 for the hotel space.) Darrell even did one thing that suggested to me he wasn't really a willing participant: He made a very clear announcement to the con over the PA just who it was doing the filming and for just what shows, as well as an explicit reminder that the film crews had to get a signed release before being put on the air. This gave a lot of folks a chance to either bug out, cover up or just turn away.

But Kage and Rod have been claiming that this mess was all Darrell's idea, that he meant well and he didn't have a clue as to what "The Man Show" is about. Given that he's been conscientious enough to do full searches for media in the past, this comes off so crazy that even the Iraqi Information Minister would have given up trying to lie. They also are convinced that he didn't get any break in consideration, of the money the hotel received for location fees. (The figure Kage quoted was $4000, but my youngest brother works in film/TV production and said that amount would have been laughed at by any hotel in L.A. The Hilton made a ton more than that.) That would mean that Darrell not only got himself into debt, but in the process decided to make himself one of the most hated people in the fandom. This is the equivalent of a loan shark victim asking to be kicked in the nuts while having his legs broken.

So either [my feeling] Darrell is a victim (ultimately of his own bad business practices, but still a victim), or [Rod & Kage] he's a complete and utter moron. Yeesh. With defenders like that, Darrell doesn't need any enemies.
